Meeting with Dr Mahathir Just YouTube it, Khairuddin tells Zahid

PETALING JAYA: Former Umno man Khairuddin Abu Hassan is pressing Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to release a recording of his meeting with Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying uploading a copy on YouTube would be more convincing than swearing on the Quran in a mosque.

“Thirty-two million Malaysians want to know who is lying and who is telling the truth,” he said in a statement to FMT, adding that the clip could be uploaded on YouTube for maximum exposure.

This comes after Zahid, who is also the Umno acting deputy-president, denied Mahathir’s claim that he had lobbied for support to bring down Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Zahid had admitted to meeting Mahathir days after he was appointed as deputy prime minister in 2015 to replace Muhyiddin Yassin, but denied it was to seek support to topple Najib.

On Saturday, Zahid who said he had kept a recording of the meeting, claimed he was prepared to take an Islamic oath “in any mosque”.

“I am ready to accept the challenge and am willing to swear in any mosque that the one who planned to topple the prime minister was that person and not me,” he was reported as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

Khairuddin, the former Batu Kawan Umno division vice-chief, said it would be more effective for Zahid to go public with the recording rather than take a religious oath at a mosque.

Khairuddin said he hoped Zahid would not invoke a claim to confidentiality in the event that he refused to make the recording public.

“This is a recording of a personal conversation and has nothing to do with government secrets,” he said.

Mahathir’s claim followed a series of attacks by Zahid on the Pakatan Harapan chairman, including his reference to the former prime minister’s Indian lineage.

On Aug 4, Zahid said his meeting with Mahathir was also attended by several individuals who had planned to topple Najib by petitioning to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and planning a no-confidence vote.

Zahid said he would not betray Najib, adding that he was grateful to the prime minister whom he served as political secretary in 1987.
